If you've ever tried to find Las Villas Taqueria on your first visit, you already know the secret handshake. The restaurant sits at 355 Pat D'Arco Highway, but there's no obvious way to walk up to it from the road. Visitors may reach it through the Twisters parking lot next door.
That observation is about the entrance, not the food. Before Las Villas moved in, the space was Whiptail. Before Whiptail, it was Banana Leaf. Three concepts, one building. Further up the same highway, Tap N Taco is opening in Albuquerque and building a location in Arizona.
The two locations offer a comparison of visibility and access along Pat D'Arco Highway, not an explanation for why restaurants come and go.
A Restaurant Space with Several Past Concepts
Pat D'Arco Highway is the local name for NM 528, and it's named for a former Rio Rancho mayor, not a food critic. It's a wide, fast, car-dependent road, and 355 Pat D'Arco sits in a stretch where the building's front door doesn't line up with how people actually approach the property.
The food blog Gil's Thrilling (And Filling) Blog, which has eaten its way through most of the metro's taco scene, described it when Las Villas took over the space in early 2026 as a very high turnover space that most recently housed Whiptail and, before that, Banana Leaf.
Las Villas has been drawing praise since opening, with visits logged as far back as February 2026 and repeat trips through April. The barbacoa and the mulita al pastor are doing real work. The building's approach is another part of the visitor experience.
Tap N Taco's Expansion
Compare that to 1120 Pat D'Arco Highway, where Tap N Taco has spent years building the kind of following that turns karaoke night into a destination. In January 2026, the Albuquerque Journal reported that Tap N Taco was preparing to open its first Albuquerque location at 4301 Wyoming NE, in the Northeast Heights, with the owners targeting a May opening. Co-owner Josh Martinez said the community had been asking for a Northeast Heights spot for a while, and co-owner Juan Estala pointed to the Rio Rancho location's karaoke and DJ nights as the draw that had already been pulling Albuquerque residents up the hill. The new spot was expected to employ roughly 45 people once it opened.
Tap N Taco isn't stopping at Albuquerque either. The owners are also building a location in downtown Chandler, Arizona, where co-owner Josh Martinez now lives, even though he was born and raised in New Mexico.
Visibility and Access Along the Corridor
Pat D'Arco Highway has a Walk Score of 23 out of 100, which puts it firmly in car dependent territory. On a road built around driving, visibility from the lane you're in and the ease of pulling in matter more than they would somewhere walkable. Tap N Taco's building faces the highway with a clear approach. The Las Villas building has a different entrance approach.
Rio Rancho itself is home to roughly 87,500 residents, most of whom, as the city's own convention and visitors bureau likes to point out, moved here from somewhere else and brought their taste for other regions' food with them. That's a lot of cars moving along a handful of arterial roads, and on a strip like Pat D'Arco, visibility and ease of pulling in are part of a driver's experience.
Other Restaurants Along the Corridor
Look a little further down Pat D'Arco and the adjacent Southern Boulevard for more dining options:
- Hot Tamales New Mexican Restaurant, 3201 Southern Blvd SE, known for a green chile chicken enchilada casserole and huevos rancheros that pull a breakfast crowd, in a colorful room easy to spot from the road.
- Al-quds Mediterranean Grill II, tucked into The Village on Rio Rancho, a shopping center that dates back to the early 1990s, when Intel's Fab 4 plant was still running at full tilt and the retail around it was built to match. The center is older and less flashy than newer strip malls, but the restaurant has held on inside it for years.
- M'tucci's Moderno, the Rio Rancho offshoot of the original M'tucci's Italian at Coors and Montano on Albuquerque's West Side, bringing the same red-sauce menu north across the river.
- Lily and Liam Bistro, 1580 Deborah Rd SE, a newer breakfast and brunch spot that's been picking up a reputation as a neighborhood regular's spot, built around a Dutch Baby pancake dressed in New Mexico ingredients.
What's Actually Happening on the Strip This Month
If you're looking for a reason to drive the corridor later this month, the calendar's cooperating. THE BLOCK is hosting the Waylon Bailey Band for a free show on Friday, August 21, at 7 p.m., part of the free live music the food hall has been booking this year. Nearby, Haynes Community Center and Park is running its Sunday is Funday series through the month, with a kids market set for August 16.
The Rio Rancho Aquatic Center's annual maintenance shutdown was scheduled through August 7. And if bowling's more your speed, the New Mexico Open rolls into Tenpins & More at Rio Rancho on August 27.
None of this requires a reason beyond a day out in Rio Rancho. That's the point.
The Takeaway Worth Remembering
Next time you're driving Pat D'Arco and trying to decide where to stop, the food matters, obviously. But so does whether you can actually see the front door from your lane. The two sites offer different approaches to visibility and access. Tap N Taco is extending its presence beyond Rio Rancho. Same highway, different approaches—but access alone doesn't tell either restaurant's story.
