The Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta Is Back!

Your Guide to the 2026 Fiesta
Liz Estrada  |  September 26, 2026

There are certain signs that fall has arrived in Albuquerque: chile roasting in the air, cooler mornings, impossibly blue skies and, if you happen to look up at just the right moment, a hot air balloon floating over somebody’s backyard.

But for nine days every October, we take things to an entirely different level.

The 54th ExxonMobil Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta® returns October 3–11, 2026, bringing more than 500 hot air balloons and visitors from around the world to Albuquerque. This year's theme, “The Scenic Route,” is particularly fitting for New Mexico: it celebrates the 100th anniversary of Route 66.

Whether you live here or you're visiting Albuquerque for the first time, Balloon Fiesta is one of those experiences that really does live up to the photographs. And while locals may grumble a little about the traffic and the alarm clock going off at 4 am, there is something pretty magical about standing on the launch field as hundreds of balloons begin inflating around you.

Here’s what to know about the 2026 Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta, including this year’s major events, schedule highlights, tickets, transportation and a few local tips for making the most of Fiesta week.

One thing first time visitors sometimes don't realize: Balloon Fiesta is divided into morning and evening sessions, and not every event happens every day. If Mass Ascension, Special Shapes or a Balloon Glow is on your must see list, choose your day accordingly.

The Big Events You Don't Want to Miss -

Mass Ascension

If you're going to experience just one classic Balloon Fiesta morning, make it a Mass Ascension.

Hundreds of balloons inflate and launch from the field in waves as Balloon Fiesta's famously recognizable launch directors better known as the Zebras coordinate the organized chaos.

For 2026, Mass Ascensions are scheduled for Saturday, October 3; Sunday, October 4; Wednesday, October 7 for Flight of the Nations; Saturday, October 10; and the Farewell Mass Ascension on Sunday, October 11.

And here's one of the best things about Balloon Fiesta: spectators aren't sitting in grandstands watching from afar. You can actually walk the enormous launch field among the balloons and crews as the balloons are being inflated.

It's hard to describe until you've experienced it.

Dawn Patrol

Long before sunrise, a small group of balloons begins glowing against the dark New Mexico sky.

That's Dawn Patrol, generally beginning around 6:00 am. The pilots launch before sunrise, giving other pilots valuable information about wind direction and conditions at different altitudes.

Even if 6 am doesn't normally exist in your vocabulary, this is one morning worth reconsidering your position.

On several days, Dawn Patrol is preceded by a 5:45 am.  Drone Light Show, making arriving early even more worthwhile.

Special Shape Rodeo™

This is the event kids love, and plenty of adults secretly love just as much.

The Special Shape Rodeo™ fills the field with balloons shaped like animals, characters and all sorts of wonderfully improbable flying objects.

In 2026, Special Shape Rodeo events are scheduled for:

Thursday, October 8 at 7:00 am.
Friday, October 9 at 7:00 am.

Friday is also Kids' Day, with goodie bag distribution beginning at 4:30 am while supplies last.

Balloon Glows & Glowdeos™

Balloon Fiesta is just as beautiful after sunset.

During a Balloon Glow, pilots inflate their balloons but keep them tethered to the ground. When burners fire together, the entire field lights up.

The evening schedule includes several variations:

Saturday, October 3: Twilight Twinkle Glow™ – 6:30 pm.
Sunday, October 4: Balloon Glow™ – 6:30 pm.
Thursday, October 8: Special Shapes Glowdeo™ – 6:30 pm.
Friday, October 9: Special Shape Glowdeo™ – 6:30 pm.
Saturday, October 10: Night Magic™ Glow – 6:30 pm.

Many evening sessions are followed by a Drone Light Show and AfterGlow™ Fireworks Show.

If you're looking for one of the most photogenic Fiesta experiences without setting the alarm for 3:30 am, the evening sessions make a pretty compelling argument.

The final morning begins with the 5:45 am. Drone Light Show, Dawn Patrol at 6:00 am., Morning Glow at 6:30 am. and the Farewell Mass Ascension at 7:00 am.

Getting There: Consider Park & Ride

Ask an Albuquerque local about Balloon Fiesta traffic and you'll probably get a look.

With hundreds of thousands of visitors coming through the city during Fiesta week, transportation deserves a little advance planning.

For many visitors, Park & Ride is one of the easiest options. Tickets include round trip bus transportation and admission to Balloon Fiesta.

For 2026, Park & Ride locations include:

  • Cottonwood Mall
  • Coronado Center
  • Hoffmantown Church
  • Intel in Rio Rancho on weekends only

There is no Park & Ride service Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday. Morning buses begin departing remote lots at 4:00 am., while evening service begins at 3:00 pm. Tickets must be purchased online.

What to Wear: Layers, Layers, Layers

October mornings in Albuquerque can be cold before sunrise and wonderfully comfortable a few hours later.

Dress in layers.

Think jacket, sweater, comfortable shoes and something warm enough for standing outside before sunrise. By late morning, you'll probably be peeling some of those layers off.

And wear shoes you don't mind walking in. Balloon Fiesta Park is enormous, and part of the fun is wandering through the launch field.

A Few Local Tips

Arrive earlier than you think you need to. Traffic builds quickly, particularly on Mass Ascension weekends. If you want to see Dawn Patrol, you need to be inside the park, not sitting on Alameda watching taillights when it begins.

Bring a lawn chair if you'd like. Chairs are permitted, although many people spend most of their time walking the field. Outside food and non-alcoholic beverages are also permitted, subject to security screening; glass and alcohol aren't allowed.

Don't skip the food. Yes, breakfast burritos at an unreasonable hour are part of the experience. So are hot chocolate and the occasional cinnamon roll that somehow seems completely justified before sunrise.

Have a weather backup plan. Ballooning is completely dependent on weather conditions. Events can be delayed or canceled when conditions aren't safe, so check the official schedule and weather updates before leaving home.

Make a day of it. After the morning launch, consider heading to Old Town. During Balloon Fiesta Week, Historic Old Town is hosting live local music daily from 11 am to 4 pm. October 3–11.

The nearby Anderson Abruzzo Albuquerque International Balloon Museum is another natural addition to your day, with special programming, tours and exhibits scheduled throughout Fiesta week.

More Than a Festival, It's an Albuquerque Tradition

For those of us who live here, Balloon Fiesta is more than something that happens at Balloon Fiesta Park.

For nine days, balloons seem to become part of everyday life.

You see them drifting over neighborhoods while you're drinking your morning coffee. Cars pull over when a balloon looks like it's going to land nearby. Kids run outside. Neighbors stand in driveways looking up at the sky. And every now and then, someone's perfectly ordinary Albuquerque backyard unexpectedly becomes a landing zone.

It's one of those wonderfully quirky things about living here.

And perhaps that's what makes Balloon Fiesta so special. Yes, it's one of the world's great ballooning events and it brings visitors to Albuquerque from around the globe. But at heart, it still feels unmistakably New Mexican, beautiful, colorful, a little unpredictable and best enjoyed outside under one of those enormous blue October skies.

If you've never experienced Balloon Fiesta from the launch field, put it on your Albuquerque list.

And if you've lived here for years?

You already know.

October is coming. Just Look up!

Event schedules, prices and activities are subject to change, particularly due to weather. Check the official Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta website before attending for the latest information.
