The New Mexico State Fair Is Back: Here's What to Know for 2026
There are certain traditions that signal a change of season in Albuquerque. The evenings get a little cooler, the smell of roasting green chile seems to find you everywhere, and then the New Mexico State Fair rolls into town.
From September 10-20, 2026, Expo New Mexico will once again welcome fairgoers for 11 days of food, live music, rodeo, agriculture, art, entertainment and some wonderfully New Mexican traditions.
For longtime locals, the State Fair can feel like an annual reunion. For newcomers and anyone considering a move to Albuquerque, it’s also a surprisingly good introduction to the culture and personality of New Mexico.
A New Mexico Tradition in the Heart of Albuquerque
The New Mexico State Fair takes place at Expo New Mexico, 300 San Pedro Drive NE, right in the middle of Albuquerque. Fair hours are generally 10 a.m.–9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 10 a.m.–10 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
And this isn't simply a carnival with a few exhibits thrown in.
Agriculture remains an important part of the fair, with livestock competitions and 4-H and FFA participants continuing a tradition that connects modern Albuquerque with New Mexico's ranching and agricultural roots.
Add art, local performers, food competitions, animals, demonstrations and entertainment, and you get one of the state's most eclectic annual gatherings.
Come Hungry
If there's one piece of advice for the State Fair, it's this: do not eat a large meal before you go.
Fair food is practically an attraction of its own.
You'll find plenty of familiar midway indulgences, but the real fun is discovering the foods that could only make complete sense in New Mexico. Green chile has a way of finding its way onto just about everything, and the fair even celebrates one of our state's most beloved creations with the Original Green Chile Cheeseburger Challenge.
This is not necessarily the day to count calories.

Rodeo Nights at Tingley Coliseum
Western culture is still very much alive in New Mexico, and the rodeo remains one of the signature attractions of the State Fair.
The 2026 schedule includes Chevron PRCA Xtreme Bulls as well as traditional PRCA rodeo performances, with several evenings combining rodeo action and major concerts at Tingley Coliseum.
It's one of those quintessential New Mexico combinations: spend the afternoon wandering the fairgrounds, grab something involving green chile, watch the rodeo and finish the evening with a concert.
The 2026 Concert Lineup
This year's entertainment schedule offers a little bit of everything.
Turnpike Troubadours kick things off on Friday, September 11, paired with PRCA Xtreme Bulls, followed by Ian Munsick on Saturday, September 12.
Later in the fair, the lineup includes Everclear on September 17, country music legend Tanya Tucker on September 18, and Mexican rock trio The Warning on September 19.
One nice bonus: admission to the State Fair is included with concert/rodeo tickets, making it easy to turn a show into an entire evening at the fair.
Don't Skip the Smaller Attractions
Some of the best moments at the State Fair aren't necessarily the headliners.
The 2026 daily schedule includes everything from pig and duck races to petting zoos, pony rides, live music, educational animal exhibits, Sea Lion Splash, Dino Encounters and high dive performances.
There are also themed Main Street days throughout the fair, including law enforcement appreciation, a 9/11 special event and firefighter recognition, Route 66 and classic car events, Healthy Living & Senior Day, and Military & Veterans Day.
It's worth checking the schedule before you go rather than simply arriving and hoping to stumble onto everything.

One of the things I love about living in Albuquerque is that we're still deeply connected to the traditions and cultures that make New Mexico unlike anywhere else.
The State Fair puts many of those things together in one place.
You'll see ranching families and city kids, generations of New Mexicans alongside people who just arrived, mariachi and rock music, livestock barns and carnival rides, traditional arts and plenty of green chile.
It's colorful, occasionally quirky, distinctly local, and that's part of its charm.
For someone thinking about relocating to Albuquerque, events like the State Fair also provide a glimpse into something that doesn't always show up in housing statistics or relocation guides: the personality of a place.

The 2026 New Mexico State Fair runs September 10 – 20 at Expo New Mexico, located at 300 San Pedro Drive NE in Albuquerque.
General admission purchased online is currently listed at $15 for adults and $10 for seniors 65+ and children ages 6–12, while children five and younger are admitted free. On site admission is higher, so buying ahead may save a few dollars.
